Every time we attend a graduation party and celebrate an achievement well made, we always forget to ask how long such happy moments last. Most graduates have had their patience run dry as a result of rocky employment terrain which is yet to change for the better. Conversely, the news by the government to freeze all public employment to 'ease' the much- talked about wage bill translated into even more gnashing pain to the expectant and already troubled potential graduates. Nevertheless, it will be wrong to assume there is nothing we can do to cushion ourselves against this eminent impediment before finally wearing the coveted graduation gawn.
Diversify;
The job market has been exposed to major changes which can not pass unnoticed. Bankers by profession, for instance, have found their way to the medical sector and no one is assured of their destination despite area of specialization. Such developments require change of tact. We must now diversify and 'spread the risks' to enable us fit in any sector. We have the chance to be more involved in the activities which might sound irrelevant currently, but will undoubtedly be handy in fueling our economic fortunes. We are not locked in our fields of study and as a result a taste of every sector is necessary. Pursuing Medicine does not bar one from participating in Arts related activities. We never know what tomorrow holds.
Watch your language;
Gone are the days when 'papers' used to 'talk' for individuals, now you must bear the burden of proof and 'talk' for your 'papers' .Communication is that important and in most cases it comes handy in separating class from state. Its a habit we form overtime. Currently, we have the chance to train our tongue, which could later hand us that marketing job 'Sheng'' may sound appetizing but watch out. If asked, I would say it's good but that would be pretentious and false. Be keen on what leaps from your lips.
Make rare friends;
Everyone will doubt me when I say that most CEO s and high ranking personnel are desperately lonely in their offices due to protocol and formality. It would not cost you a penny to walk in a lecturers or any other office with no formal engagements but just a casual warm message of greetings and well wishes. But it might cost you otherwise. Make unexpected friends, you already have enough of your peers numbers. Start your journey to the corporate world by being different in your thoughts. If I may ask, how much does it cost to greet a gate man on your way to the office? I know of a company in Kenya's Industrial Area where watchmen are used to test the humility of interviewees. The job market is that tricky and doing something unique is not meant to be an option.
Academics is not the end in itself;
As you keep tight watch on your academic progress, remember you can use one eye in doing that as you engage the other in supporting activities - ''supporting'' not all. No man is an island; not even academics. It is the perfect time you read widely and abreast yourself of all the details in the corporate world. Be well conversant with your environment. Reading only 'big' books without even sparing time for the news bulletin can only be described as unique. Learning your environment is the first step in improving it. Know all the details of ''Bangla-pesa”, it will surely help you cope up with the ever changing structure of interviews which are impatiently moving from boardrooms to open air chats.
Let us upset the status quo by being different. Take advantage of the facilities currently at your disposal - someone lacks them. At such point when things have taken a 'wrong turn' we must now not think in the same manner. It is not business as usual if you are not blessed with the entrepreneurial mind- take it from me.
